About Us
The Multiple
Sclerosis Society of the ACT has been providing services care and assistance
for people with MS, their carers and their families since 1978.
In the early seventies a group of people with MS met in each others
homes forming a friendship circle and support group. With time, more people
came to these gatherings and they decided to form a more formal group.
So the Association began in 1978. The name was changed to the Multiple
Sclerosis Society of the ACT in 1983.
For a time the Society operated in part of the SHOUT offices
(Self Help Organisations Uniting Together) located at the Hughes Shopping
Centre. All this changed with a generous donation towards the building
of Gloria McKerrow House; the society's current headquarters. Other fundraising
efforts allowed for the beginning of service facilities to people with
MS in the ACT and region.
Fundraising efforts of the Blue and Gold Committee raised
the much needed funds for the furnishings and fittings of the Respite
Care Cottage which was opened in 1989. The cottage, adjacent to Gloria
McKerrow House, provides accommodation for people with MS and their primary
carers, and to other people with disabilities when available.
Today the society is staffed by full time and part
time employees, contractors and volunteers. The society seeks to ensure
that funds are used to maximise services and facilities for those with
MS. The society's funding needs are met mainly through the fundraising
efforts of members, volunteers and staff. Over 95% of the Society's funds
are raised through the raffles, READ-a-thons, other special events, membership
fees, donations and bequests.
