Lydia Osmers

“I can”

LydiaLydia describes her journey with multiple sclerosis as similar to performing a very long, challenging, annoying, crazy obstacle course.  Her journey began at the age of twenty years old while studying in her third year of a six-year medical degree at Monash University.

A reduction in vision during warm weather was the first symptom, followed by various others effecting her mobility and hands.  The first obstacle was studying with reduced vision and surrendering her driver’s license at the age of 23 years old.  This felt like a very large obstacle at the time, but Lydia, determined to complete her degree, she just kept studying.

A decade later this amazing woman pushed through her career.  Firstly, as an intern then resident medical officer and later as a medical adviser.  This was all possible with assistance from visual aids and equipment.  Reduced hand function was assisted by various techniques, and voice activated technology and mobility aids and physiotherapy assisted with impaired mobility.

Today, Lydia no longer works as a medical practitioner and lives as a young person in an aged care nursing home.  Understandably, you may think this positive woman’s life took a nose dive – far from the truth.  Lydia always tries to look on the bright side of life, and with the constant support of her friends and family, she enjoys a full and busy social life with MS coming along for the ride.

The MS Ambassador Program is delighted to have Lydia join our team of positive role models.  This strong young woman, will share with you why it was “ok” when her last boyfriend decided he “could not cope with her MS”.  Lydia replied with “that is ok, because “I CAN”.
