Tom Gretton

“Positives in life

I was officially diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2004, but my symptoms commenced a year earlier.  In 2003, I experienced severe migraines and put it down to working 60 to 70 hours a week in the banking industry.

Tom GrettonWorking full-time to support my family whilst experiencing chronic fatigue, poor balance, visual difficulties and an unsupportive employer, was challenging. My symptoms were all invisible - it seemed the odds were stacked against me and I felt I had no choice but to resign from the job that I was so good at and loved.

I made the decision to leave the negatives behind me and concentrate on the positives in life, focusing on how I can help the MS community and anyone else in need.  A decade and a half on, I’ve defied the odds and walk approximately five kilometers a day for my health and wellbeing, and because I can!

I’m now a dedicated volunteer for MSL, volunteering on a weekly basis and assisting with major fundraising events.  I’m also a member of and MS art group and a fortnightly MS Face to Face Peer Support Discussion Group, which I also help facilitate.

I have recently taken on the role of MS Ambassador, which will allow me to share my story for the benefit of others, as well as speak about the challenges of living with the invisible symptoms of MS.
