$1m funding commitment for MS research

12 May 2020

As announced by our peak body, MS Australia this week, Multiple Sclerosis Limited (MS) is pleased to confirm that we are providing a funding boost of $1 million to support MS research in Australia.

The funding will be used to fund further research into myelin repair and neuroprotective research that will pave the way to end MS forever.

Our CEO John Blewonski, speaking in his capacity as Acting CEO for MS Research Australia said the additional funding gave the research community an extra boost for the critical work they do in seeking a cure for multiple sclerosis.

“In an incredibly competitive environment for not-for-profits where funding has been made even tougher due to the impacts of coronavirus, this is a significant commitment from our state MS organisations,” Mr Blewonski said.

“MS Australia is committed to all aspects of the MS Strategic Roadmaps, including our goal of increasing funding to MS research to record levels and ensuring the MS research community has certainty regarding their research and career path.”

Dr Julia Morahan, Head of Research at MS Research said the new funding would support the MS research community.

“This new funding will be invested in accelerating the progress of the holy grail of MS research, remyelination and methods to boost neuroprotection to potentially provide avenues to enhance repair and restore function in those with progressive MS,” said Dr Morahan.

“Ongoing funding is critical to the continuation of the world-leading work our research community is doing to find a cure for MS,” Dr Morahan said.
