The power of peer connection

people talking on phones and laptops“Hearing that others experience similar symptoms and concerns, then having the opportunity to discuss these, was a rare opportunity”, Telegroup participant.

Connection and empathy are what make our Peer Support Program successful. Our peer support groups create a safe space where participants can share experiences, and give and receive emotional and practical support, helping each other to overcome the challenges of living with multiple sclerosis or caring for someone with the condition.

Connecting with someone who truly gets you
When you contact us to be part of a peer support group, our team will connect you with a volunteer who has similar interests to you or is living a similar stage of their MS journey. This way you are connected with someone who really understand what you are going through.

There are many ways to stay connected and supported during COVID-19
Telephone support: one-on-one support from a peer support volunteer.  Typically, telephone support is provided to those who have been recently diagnosed, whose multiple sclerosis has significantly changed, or who have started on new medication.

Telegroups:
hosted by peer support volunteers. These are a great way of connecting with others who are living with multiple sclerosis or who are caring for someone who is.  They can be informal, with a focus on socialising, or formal, with a guest speaker who covers a specific topic.
There is a wide variety of Telegroups for you to join, including general groups, women’s and men’s only groups, carer’s groups, and mum’s groups. They run on various days and at different times, so you can find the one that best suits you.

Telelinks: run weekly for 1.5 hours over six weeks and are hosted by Peer Support Coordinators. Across the six weeks, you can connect with others and hear guest speakers from various health professions speaking about topics that might be relevant to you, such as symptom management, medications, stress management, mindfulness, the importance of exercise and diet, and much more.
