About the NDIS
The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is a better way of providing support and services for people living with disability. It’s all based around helping you meet your goals, such as living safely and independently at home, finding and keeping a job or volunteering, getting out and about in the community or staying social.
The NDIS:
- integrates with other sectors such as health, aged care, education and housing
- has no impact on the Disability Support Pension and is not a means-tested entitlement
- provides you with purchasing power, choice and control
- is managed by a Commonwealth statutory authority, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)
- has bipartisan support, so all governments are working together to ensure its success
- is partially funded by the Medicare levy, which means that all of society is contributing toward the funds needed to run the scheme
Make the most from NDIS Services
NDIS funds ‘any reasonable and necessary supports participants need to enjoy an ordinary life’.
This covers a range of disability care services. The NDIS doesn’t fund daily living expenses, such as: rent, food, and bills. This is still funded by your usual source of income — work, disability pensions, etc.
