Sue's Story

“My first goal was to move back home. Now, my goals are to achieve independence in life, to get on with seeing friends and being part of the community.”

Sue is a wife, mother and grandmother who has been living with multiple sclerosis for 17 years. Sue describes her first symptom as feeling like somebody was kicking her behind the knee. She also had difficulty with her vision.

Before the NDIS, Sue’s symptoms were effecting her so much that she was unable to live at home. Sue’s first goal was to move back home — and with the support of the NDIS and Sue’s MS Consultant Claire, she achieved this!

The NDIS has provided Sue with lots of things to help her stay in her own home. Two people visit, four times a day to hoist Sue onto the bed and assist with her personal care. A cleaner comes in once a fortnight to help with the housework, and sometimes Sue’s carers help her with meal preparation. They have also made modifications to Sue’s bathroom and they fund all incontinence products.

The NDIS is changing the lives of carers and families, too. Sue’s husband of 39 years, Trevor, has taken on many responsibilities including her personal care in the past. Trevor says, “The NDIS has given Sue a chance to be home. It’s been a saviour for us.”

Sue’s MS Consultant Claire says, “Without the support of the NDIS, Sue wouldn’t be at home, happy and accessing the community, and spending quality time with Trevor.”

Sue says, “It’s very important for me to have my independence, get around and do the things I want to do and have a better life.”

If you have any impairment that stops you from doing everyday things by yourself, like Sue does, you might be eligible for insurance support to help you achieve your goals. Contact MS Connect on 1800 042 138 for more information.
