MS Peer Support

Living with multiple sclerosis or caring for someone with the condition can be challenging – especially the people newly diagnosed, who can feel particularly vulnerable. At MS, one way we’ve addressed this is through our Peer Support program, whereby people living with multiple sclerosis or their family members or carers can support one another either face to face, over the phone or through Facebook.

We train volunteers with lived experience to become Peer Support volunteers.

Giving and receiving practical and emotional support can help you understand a recent diagnosis, manage your symptoms and live well with multiple sclerosis.

Our MS Peer Support program is a great way for people living with multiple sclerosis, carers, family and friends to connect with and support each other. It’s also a great way to make new friends!

We offer MS Peer Support through a variety of channels, and it’s completely free to participate.

Contact MS Connect™ on Freecall 1800 042 138 or email msconnect@ms.org.au to register your interest and discuss your needs.

What Peer Support we offer

Where are our face-to-face Peer support groups?

Our face-to-face MS Peer Support groups meet at various locations across ACT, NSW, Tasmania and Victoria. They usually meet either fortnightly or monthly, but this varies from group to group.

Some groups get together for a casual coffee, some have discussion groups around specific multiple sclerosis issues and others get together for activities such as singing and exercise – there really is something for everybody!

If you can’t find a group in your area, please contact MS Connect™ to register your interest and discuss alternative options.

Contact MS Connect™ on 1800 042 138 or email msconnect@ms.org.au to ask about our groups, or you can also download lists of all the face-to-face MS Peer Support groups here:

Self Help groups

In addition to MS volunteer-led Peer Support groups, there are Self Help groups in NSW and ACT led by people who are not MS volunteers, but who work diligently and thoughtfully for their local communities. You can contact MS Connect™ (Freecall 1800 042 138 or email msconnect@ms.org.au) or download the Self Help group listing here:

MS 1:1 Peer Support via phone

Phone MS Peer Support is a great way to have a one-on-one conversation with somebody who understands, no matter where you live.

We can connect you with one of our trained MS Peer Support volunteers over the phone. You will be offered a set number of phone calls over an extended period of time, usually about six to eight calls over a few months.

Many people have said it’s a great way to build a relationship and give and receive advice. You can choose if you want to speak to another person living with multiple sclerosis, a carer or a family member.

For more information contact MS Connect™ on Freecall 1800 042 138 or email msconnect@ms.org.au.

Telegroups

Our MS Peer Support Telegroups enable people with similar interests or experience to connect by telephone as an alternative to face to face groups.

Some groups have a particular focus, such as young carers or parents, while others are a mixed bunch of ages and roles. It’s best to contact MS Connect™ (Freecall 1800 042 138 or email msconnect@ms.org.au) to have a chat about which group will best suit your goals.

Facebook MS Peer Support

Online MS Peer Support is a great way to make connections from the comfort of your own home, or on the go, no matter where you live. Online support leads to better self-care and a stronger sense of wellness. Plus, it’s a great way to make a new group of friends outside of your usual networks!

We have set up a number of private, supportive pages to provide Online MS Peer Support. Our role is purely to set up the page, then it is moderated by trained MS Peer Support volunteers. Our online communities are built on mutual respect and emotional support – they are not designed for medical advice.

These pages include:

Telelinks

Telelinks are phone-based, short-term Peer Support programs facilitated by the MS Peer Support Coordinators. Six sessions weekly, and each session is 90 minutes long. Guest speakers on topics agreed by the members prompt discussion and learning. They’re really suitable when joining an ongoing group doesn’t suit your needs, or the whole idea is brand new.
